June 2022 updates

June has been a very busy month. We had our normal Music for the Mind sessions on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. We’re now averaging between 30 and 40 people at our sessions that includes those living with dementia, their carers and our volunteers.

As there were 5 Thursdays in the June we decided to put on an extra session on the 5th Thursday of the month to give people a chance to play boccia. Boccia is like playing bowls but you play it sitting down and it can be played by everyone. We had about 20 people present and everybody who wanted to play had a go and thoroughly enjoyed it. People played in pairs and it got quite competitive. We hope to run more sessions in the future.

We arranged a trip to Tyntesfield on the 22nd June for any of our couples who were interested. Four pairs, Merv and Kate, Eileen and Rosina, Ros and Barbara and Jenny and Geoff went along and Dial-a-Ride provided the transport. Three volunteers also went to lend a helping hand. The National Trust’s shuttle bus transferred everyone down to the house then we all walked around the ground floor and heard all about the house from the stewards. It was a very hot day so we decided to get the shuttle bus back to the café at the top where we all enjoyed a cuppa and a piece of cake. The National Trust staff and volunteers, who are all being trained to be dementia friendly, looked after us all very well. We hope to arrange a couple more Tyntesfield trips before the end of summer.

The Roman Baths put on a special open evening on 29th June for local residents to get the opportunity to walk around the Baths without the crowds. Les and Margaret expressed an interest in going so off we went. We picked them up and dropped them off near the Baths and then walked round with them. It’s changed a lot from the last time I was there but the slips and trips hazards are still as bad as ever. Those Romans couldn’t lay tiles properly!! Anyway we all enjoyed it and stopped off and had some chips before returning home.

There is also a photo of our treasurer with Giuseppe who won the Great British Bake Off earlier this year. Giuseppe opened the Saltford Festival week on 2nd July where our DAA had an information stall.
